Botox

botox injectionDeep wrinkles such as frown lines between the eyes, forehead lines and crows feet are caused by overactive muscle movement which gradually wear away the collagen in the skin, causing the skin to crease and wrinkles to appear. A highly effective treatment to treat facial lines caused primarily by the action of muscles on the skin is the injection of small amounts of Botulinum toxin (produced commercially as Botox®) into the affected area.

What is Botox?

Botox® is a purified form of a specific neuromuscular blocking agent which acts by stopping the signal from the nerve to the muscle, thereby preventing the muscle from contracting, particularly on areas such as the forehead and between the eyebrows. It can also be used effectively to reduce excess sweating. After the procedure, you may experience slight redness and/or bruising. There will be no immediate effect upon your wrinkles but they should start to disappear over the next few days, with maximum effect 2-14 days later. Good results may be obtained after a single injection and usually last from 3-6 months or sometimes longer.

Who can use Botox?

Basically anyone is able to use Botox - not children of course - but there are certain things that should be taken, and particular issues that may prevent certain people from being able to use Botox. For example, patients who are pregnant, breastfeeding, or who have a neurological disorder, for example, should not use Botox.

What are the Side Effects?

As with any other type of procedure, there are certain risks, complications, and side effects that can occur, and these all need to be taken fully into consideration.

If you are planning or even simply considering to have a Botox procedure done, you should consult with our doctor, and make sure to take the situation very seriously. You want to make yourself as informed and knowledgeable as possible.
